A plate of truffle pasta and Beatriz Milhazes. It is understandable that the Brazilian artist could inspire Jason Wu for his Spring collection, but a random dish that he had ordered whilst in Paris? An unlikely influence, indeed; but, oh the magic that became of it. It may be unwise to be thinking about favorites at such an early point in the fashion weeks, but Mr. Wu will certainly be on my list. I could not help but gleefully smile whilst reviewing his most recent works.
There were definite tones of the 60's in the chic cateye glasses, the round sunglasses, and the plethora of hair wraps. Milhazes' influence was clearly visible in the palate of the collection, the larger-than-life corsages, and the 3D floral appliqué. Wu's sartorial excellence was exhibited in his elongated pantsuits and structured jackets. The notorious truffle pasta was represented in the petaled dresses, skirts, and blouses (there was even a nude ruffled bandeau under an opened blazer that was particularly interesting). The sheer topped models and the elegant floor-length gowns showed Wu's eye for romanticism.
There were many aspects to Jason Wu's most recent collection; but what he has proven to us once again, is that he can take all of these concepts and meld them together in a brilliant collection that is both artistically clever and consumer conscious.
